Eastleigh's Second Avenue in Section One is a bustling trade hub where vendors display their fruits and snacks on the roadside. However, beneath their stands lies a raw sewage problem that has been ongoing for almost eight months this year and has been recurring for the past five years.
According to Dr. Ali Mamo, who operates a clinic in the area, the situation is worse during the rainy season as the water is discharged and floods the doorsteps of almost all buildings. This has resulted in businesses being affected, as well as residential houses in the area.
Dr. Mamo stated, 'This is raw sewage, and the situation has been like this since 2016. This is an absolute health hazard not only to the young children but the general populace.'
Traders in the area have expressed frustration with the lack of action from the county government and the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company. Officials from the water firm have toured the area, but no action has been taken so far.
Residents now fear that there might be an outbreak of diseases due to the poor sanitation in the area. The situation has been ongoing since 2016, and it is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to resolve the problem.
