On Monday night, a tragic incident unfolded on Mazeras Highway in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, when actor Davies Mwabili, popularly known as 'Inspekta Mwala', allegedly drove under the influence and hit a pedestrian, killing him on the spot.
According to police, Mwabili was driving a Toyota Axio from Kaloleni town at around 11 pm when he attempted to overtake and veered off the road, hitting 35-year-old Samwel Mwaki, who was crossing the road.
The vehicle dragged Mwaki for about 100 metres, fatally wounding him and causing severe injuries to his skull, hands, and legs before coming to a halt.
Police Chief David Maina, who received information about the crash, rushed to the scene and rescued Mwabili, who was on the verge of being lynched by enraged residents and boda boda riders.
Police had to fire in the air to disperse the angry crowd, and Mwabili was subsequently arrested and freed on a Sh40,000 police bond pending his trial.
He is set to appear in court on Friday next week to answer the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
