Published on August 29, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held talks in Yokohama, Japan, on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) seventh summit.

Japan has committed to supporting Kenya's quest for Universal Health Coverage through Public-Private Partnership arrangements. The country also plans to support Africa's efforts on immunization, development of health-related infrastructure, and services such as water and sewage through the Africa Health and Well-Being Initiative.

During the talks, President Kenyatta thanked Prime Minister Abe for hosting TICAD VI in Kenya in 2016, which helped raise the country's profile as an investment destination of choice in Africa. The President noted that in the past three years, the number of Japanese companies setting up shop in Kenya increased from 41 to 57.

The two leaders also discussed regional peace and security, sustainable blue economy, and the need to address the trade imbalance between the two countries, which is currently in favor of Japan. President Kenyatta asked Japan to support Kenya's bid to win a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

More than 27 African heads of state and country representatives attended the TICAD summit, with Uhuru and Abe holding private talks at the Intercontinental Yokohama Grand Hotel in Yokohama.
