On August 17, 2019, Harambee Starlets faced off against Ethiopia in an International Friendly match at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

However, the team's focus was soon shifted to the Olympic qualifier against Malawi, where they suffered a 3-2 defeat in the first leg match on August 17, 2019, in Blantyre.

China-based striker Tabitha Chawinga scored a brace for Malawi, while Kenya's hopes of overturning the deficit lie in Sunday's return leg in Machakos.

The winners on aggregate will meet with either Ghana or Gabon in the next round of the competition.

Starlets assistant coach Jackline Juma blamed poor officiating for the defeat, stating, 'The referees were not fair at all. Their poor officiating demoralized the girls, but it's not yet over. I am confident we will do well at home.'

Meanwhile, Kenya's junior team secured a Cecafa final ticket after beating Rwanda 4-2 in post-match penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular time.

The junior team will face the winners between Uganda and Burundi in the final.
