On August 28, 2019, Nairobi County's Director of Communication, Jacob Elkana, confirmed that a major crackdown was underway to enforce Governor Sonko's directive to repaint buildings within the CBD.
As part of his efforts to beautify the city, Governor Sonko had issued a 30-day notice on May 28, 2019, requiring building owners to repaint and renovate their properties.
However, some building owners disregarded the directive, citing it as a waste of resources. Governor Sonko then pursued the non-compliant individuals in court.
The charges against the building owners are for contravening the Public Health Law CAP 242 and county bylaws that require buildings to be repainted every two years.
Under Governor Sonko's initiative, building owners were encouraged to choose their preferred colors to repaint their buildings and contribute to Nairobi's growth as East Africa's commercial hub.
