On August 28, 2019, Kelly Clarkson shared her harrowing experience of being hospitalized for a burst ovarian cyst, a painful health scare that occurred just one week after she underwent surgery for appendicitis.

According to Clarkson, the ovarian cyst was more painful than the appendicitis, which she had suffered just a week prior while hosting the Billboard Music Awards.

“Blake [Shelton] was talking to me and all of the sudden, everything he said just went away and I had to grab his arm and I was like, ‘Something is wrong,’” Clarkson recalled, describing the moment when she realized something was amiss.

She was filming The Voice at the time and didn't know what was happening, but later found out it was a cyst bursting on her ovary.

Clarkson's ordeal is a reminder that ovarian cysts are not uncommon, with most women developing at least one cyst each month due to their regular periods. However, only about 8 percent of premenopausal women develop large cysts that require treatment.

“The vast majority of ovarian cysts are benign, follicular cysts that come and go with your cycle and need no further management,” said Taraneh Shirazian, MD, a gynecologist at NYU Langone Health.

Here's hoping Kelly is feeling strong ahead of the debut of her talk show this fall!
