Joseph Okumu, a 22-year-old Harambee Stars defender, has made a significant move to Swedish top-tier side IF Elfsborg. The transfer comes after his impressive performance at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Okumu, who has been playing for USA's Real Monarchs, has reportedly agreed personal terms with Elfsborg. He is expected to make his debut for the Swedish club on August 31, when they play Sirius in their next league match.
Elfsborg, one of Sweden's most successful clubs, currently sits eighth on the Allsvenskan standings with 27 points. Okumu's move to Elfsborg marks a significant milestone in his career, which has seen him play for Chemelil Sugar FC, Free State Stars, and AFC Ann Arbor.
Okumu began his professional football career at Chemelil Sugar FC five years ago, joining the KPL outfit straight from Kakamega High School. He later played for South Africa's Free State Stars and USA's AFC Ann Arbor before joining Real Monarchs.
Okumu has previously featured for Kenya's U20 and U23 teams, growing through the ranks to Harambee Stars senior team. His impressive performance at the 2019 AFCON has earned him a move to Elfsborg, a significant achievement for the young defender.
