Kenya Unveils $5B in PPP Projects to Attract UK Investors

President Uhuru Kenyatta announced over $5 billion in immediate investment opportunities across 10 public-private partnership (PPP) projects during a London business forum, positioning Kenya as a prime destination for UK capital. The initiatives span infrastructure, healthcare, and food security sectors, including the Nairobi Smart Street Lights Project and Galana Kulalu Food Security Project.

UK Collaboration and Financing Agreements

The President revealed ongoing discussions between Kenya's National Treasury and the UK's Export Finance (UKEF) to facilitate financing for British companies pursuing PPP investments. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) aims to secure $1.3 million in funding through the Private Sector Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) for early-stage PPP project development.

Nairobi International Financial Centre Launch

Kenyatta emphasized the upcoming opening of the Nairobi International Financial Centre (NIFC), designed to attract global financial institutions seeking regional headquarters in Africa. The center will prioritize green finance, fintech innovation, and infrastructure development, leveraging Kenya's growing tech ecosystem.

Economic Resilience and Climate Initiatives

Kenya's economic growth projections of over 7% for 2022 were highlighted, alongside its World Bank ranking as Africa's fourth most business-friendly nation. The President credited prudent fiscal policies and infrastructure investments for the country's stability. Climate efforts include a green bond framework developed with UK Department for International Development support.

UK Investment in Affordable Housing

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab announced £20 billion in new investments for Kenya's Big 4 Projects, including 10,000 energy-efficient affordable homes. This initiative combines £5.2 billion in UK Aid with £3.5 billion in private sector funding to meet Kenya's 2022 housing targets.
