Published on August 28, 2019, Kisii County's Gusii Stadium has undergone significant upgrades, making it a suitable venue for hosting major sporting events.
With an investment of Sh52 million, the stadium boasts an eight-lane running track, an underground drainage and irrigation system, and a smooth playing surface.
However, athletes and officials have raised concerns over the poor quality of the running track's sand, which they claim affects performance.
"As technical officials of Athletics Kenya, we have received complaints about the type of sand used on the running track at Gusii Stadium. It is of poor quality and I appeal to the county government to put up an artificial running track," said Nyanza South Athletics Kenya chairman Peter Angwenyi.
The stadium has successfully hosted several events, including the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (Kicosca) games in August last year.
Despite its shortcomings, Kisii Governor James Ongwae remains optimistic about the stadium's potential, inviting national sports organizations to host events in the county.
However, the county's handling of a Sh133 million allocation for sporting facilities in 2015/2016 has raised eyebrows, with concerns over the misuse of funds.
