On August 27, 2019, a Nairobi court heard a case of tax evasion against a Chinese investor.

Gao Fei, the director of New X-Tigi Technology Limited, was charged with failing to pay Value Added Tax (VAT) amounting to Sh194,357,743 for the year starting January 2015 to July 2016.

Prosecution alleged that Mr. Fei failed to submit tax returns for the years 2015 and 2016, as required by law.

The court was told that Mr. Fei was a flight risk and opposed his release on bail.

However, he was released on a cash bail of Sh150,000 with a bond of Sh1 million and ordered to deposit his passport in court pending hearing.
