As I reflect on the medical professionals who dedicate their lives to healing, I am reminded of the importance of prioritizing health and safety in our region.
With Ebola currently spreading in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, it's imperative that we take proactive measures to prevent its spread to neighboring countries, including Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya.
Unfortunately, Tanzania has failed to acknowledge and address a recent outbreak of dengue fever, which has resulted in unnecessary loss of life. As a survivor of the disease, I can attest to its severity and the importance of timely intervention.
With the East African Community promoting open borders and free trade, it's essential that we discuss the risks associated with these policies, including the potential for disease outbreaks to spread rapidly across the region.
Instead of focusing on a hypothetical Federation, we should prioritize constructing strong institutions and investing in resources that will make unity a reality, rather than just a dream.
By addressing the root causes of health hazards, such as porous borders and a lack of medical staff, we can work towards creating a safer and healthier region for all.
Let's shift our language around regionalism to focus on tangible and ambitious solutions that prioritize the well-being of our citizens.
Until then, I urge everyone to stay vigilant, pray for our collective health, and express gratitude to the medical professionals who risk their lives to save others.
