On August 27, 2019, Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua sparked controversy with his statement on Wamlambez and Tetema hit songs.
Mutua argued that the songs, which have gained massive popularity in Kenya and internationally, contain dirty lyrics not suitable for public consumption.
He stated, "Tetema and Wamlambez songs are strictly forbidden outside of clubs and bars. It's embarrassing to see even national leaders singing and dancing to the obscenity in public. The lyrics are dirty and not suitable for public consumption, especially mixed company or where children are likely to be watching or listening. Both songs are pure pornography,"
Mutua further explained that while KFCB cannot ban the songs due to their coded language, he urged the public to be aware of their explicit content and restrict them to clubs and bars for adults only.
Wamlambez, a song by Sailors, has become a national anthem in Kenya, while Tetema by Rayvanny ft Diamond Platnumz has gained international recognition with two remixes featuring notable artists.
