On Monday, a Member of County Assembly and a Chief in Baringo County were arrested for allegedly inciting residents to boycott the ongoing census exercise.

Ilchamus Ward MCA Joseph Leparsalach and Salabani Location Chief Francis Olekipirich were arrested and arraigned on Tuesday at the Kabarnet Law Courts, facing charges of incitement.

Baringo County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed the incident, stating that the two will be charged with incitement.

Principal Secretary for Irrigation, Fred Segor, warned that anyone blocking the exercise will face the law, urging locals to cooperate with enumerators.

Several other people have been arrested over various offenses during the 2019 census, including a man and his wife in Kisumu who attacked a chief and village elder who had accompanied census officers at their house in Obunga slums.

The man, identified as Richard Ochieng, bit the fingers of a village elder, while his wife hit the area Assistant Chief with a piece of brick, hurting him on his thigh.

Additionally, two people were arrested in connection to the gang raping of a census enumerator in Maseno on Saturday night, and five others were arrested in various areas in the larger Nyanza region for allegedly impersonating census officials.
