On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated 136 Kenyans who have secured employment as seafarers with the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The President made the announcement during the flagging off of the first consignment of Kenyan crude oil at the Port of Mombasa.
The 136 seafarers are part of a larger group of 275 Kenyans who have gained employment as part of the government's efforts to promote the blue economy sector.
According to the President, the seafarers will earn a minimum of Kshs.85,000 per month, and will also receive additional benefits including return tickets, meals, accommodation, health insurance, and access to free world-class training.
The President urged the newly recruited seafarers to emulate the exemplary performance of their predecessors, who have led to the Mediterranean Shipping Company steadily increasing the hiring of young Kenyans.
During the ceremony, the President also flagged off a consignment of 200,000 barrels of low-sulphur crude oil worth Ksh.1.2 billion, destined for the United Kingdom.
