On August 26, 2019, Airtel Kenya took a significant step in its bid to grow its customer base by unveiling new mobile numbers with the 01 prefix.
The move, which comes months after the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) introduced the new numbers, will see the firm offer new and existing customers a selection of preferred numbers at all Airtel customer service and SIM selling outlets throughout the country.
Airtel Kenya was allocated three million of the new numbers, with the prefixes 0100, 0101, and 0102 being rolled out to customers first.
According to the Communications Authority of Kenya, the introduction of the new numbers was necessitated by the exhaustion of existing prefixes, including 0722, 0723, 0733, and 0734.
Airtel Kenya CEO Prasanta Das Sarma urged subscribers to take advantage of the new numbers, saying, "We are glad to be the first telco to roll out the new prefix numbers and we urge Kenyans looking for new connections to visit any of our SIM selling outlets or Airtel shops and get their new numbers."
