On August 12, 2019, a disturbing image went viral on social media showing a patient, later identified as John Zabazungu, being wheeled into an Equity Bank branch in Kampala, Uganda, with oxygen masks and a nasal cannula.
According to his daughter, Molly Nakato, John had been seeking advanced treatment at Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital before his passing.
Speaking to Daily Monitor, Nakato confirmed her father's demise, stating that they had been recommended to see a specialist at the hospital to work on his throat before his passing.
John's body will be taken to Focus Ministries church led by Bishop David Kiganda in Kisenyi, Kampala suburb, for prayers, before being laid to rest on Tuesday, August 27, in Mukono District.
The incident sparked widespread outrage online, with many questioning the level of integrity in Uganda's healthcare systems.
Equity Bank defended itself, stating that John's family elected to take him to the bank as the institution explored how to process the financial transaction without his physical presence.
However, the hospital where John was being treated, Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital, refuted claims that they played a role in the incident, stating that they had not admitted such a patient.
