On August 25, 2019, a tragic road accident occurred at Gakunyu in Gatanga, Murang'a county, claiming the lives of three people, including two blood brothers.
The brothers were traveling from John De Mathew's burial when a pickup collided head-on with a saloon car, leaving five others injured.
John De Mathew, a renowned Kikuyu Benga artiste, had succumbed to injuries in a separate accident near Blue Post Hotel in Thika just a week prior.
De Mathew's family and friends remembered him as a family man who cherished love and unity. His two wives, in separate tributes, praised his unconditional love and generosity.
"YOU TRULY WERE A WONDERFUL AND KIND MAN," read his first wife's emotional tribute. "YOU WERE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE, THE ONE WHO DID EVERYTHING HUMANLY POSSIBLE TO PROTECT US ME AND OUR CHILDREN."
His second wife, Caroline Waithera, also paid tribute, saying, "You gifted me with so many gifts, the most precious of them being our children. Thank you for allowing the world to call me a mother."
