On Saturday evening, the 2019 National Population and Housing Census kicked off, with President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta setting an example by being among the first to be enumerated.
The President, accompanied by former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta and several family members, was enumerated at his Nairobi home.
Reiterating his call for Kenyans to participate in the census, President Kenyatta emphasized the need for accurate data to inform national development programs.
“Mine is to say that I have formally gone through the process. We’ve completed that exercise with my family,” the President said.
He added, “Once again I reiterate that this is an exercise that’s geared towards helping us plan for your future. It is an exercise that is geared towards better utilization of your taxes to ensure that they get to the people. You cannot plan if you do not have the right statistics,”
Also present during the exercise were Treasury CS Ukur Yatani, Principal Secretary for National Planning Torome Saitoti, and other officials.
CS Yatani reported that the exercise had taken off smoothly across the country, with no major hitches.
