As Kenya prepares for its 2019 national census, the government has issued a stern warning to citizens against providing false information to enumerators.
Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna said security has been beefed up across the country to ensure a smooth census exercise, which begins on Saturday.
Enumerators will spend about 30 minutes in each household, and citizens are advised to report to their local administrative office or call the toll-free number 0800221020 if they are not enumerated by August 31.
According to Oguna, all persons within Kenya's borders on the census night will be counted, including those found in households, outdoor sleepers, and individuals in hotels and institutions.
“Anyone who will be present in your household on the night of 24th/25th August 2019 will be counted together with your household,” Oguna said.
Security has been beefed up with over 10,000 police officers deployed to accompany enumerators to each household, who will be easily identifiable by their official identity cards and reflector jackets.
For the first time, all census data will be captured electronically through tablet computers, and preliminary results are expected to be released in three months.
KNBS has assured the public of the confidentiality of the data, with all census officials swearing an oath of secrecy as required by the Statistics Act 2006.
