Miguna Miguna Criticizes Kenyan Government for Excluding Diaspora Community from Census

Published on August 24, 2019

Miguna Miguna, a Kenyan lawyer, has criticized the Kenyan government for excluding the diaspora community from the upcoming census. He argues that Kenyans living abroad have the right to be counted and should not be excluded from the exercise.

According to Miguna, the government's decision to exclude Kenyans living abroad from the census is a mistake that will only benefit politicians. He claims that the government's intention is to use the census data to favor certain ethnic groups and politicians.

"Wakenya wanaoishi nje ya nchi wana haki sawia na wale wanaoishi nchini humo. Wao pia wanastahili kuhesabiwa. Pili kusanya taarifa kuhusu makabila ya watu ni hatua ambayo haina manufaa kwa Mkenya ambaye anatoa taarifa hiyo. Inapania tu kuwanufaisha wanasiasa na tamaa zao," Miguna said in a tweet.

The Kenyan government has announced that it will not include Kenyans living abroad in the census, but will instead ask their families to provide information about them, especially those who have been abroad for 15 years or more.

However, the government claims that the census is necessary to provide a complete picture of the country's diversity and to understand the changes in migration patterns.

Some politicians believe that only candidates from certain ethnic groups should be allowed to run for president, but Miguna disagrees with this view.
