On August 21, 2019, a manhunt was launched in Nyamira after an IT supervisor in the National Population and Housing Census went missing during pre-census preparation and briefing.

According to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba, the officer had been issued with a census tablet and a power bank but instead of using them for the census, he used them as collateral to buy alcohol.

Mariba confirmed that the officer had been arrested and that the census machines had been recovered.

"The ICT census supervisor was issued with a census tablet and a power bank and consequently went missing since Wednesday," said Mariba, the County Census Committee chairman.
