Published on August 23, 2019, Rwanda and Uganda have reached an agreement to unblock online access to each other's publications after some websites in both countries were targeted for censorship.

According to Patrick Nyirishema, Director General of Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (Rura), consultations were ongoing with their Ugandan counterparts to resolve the issue 'within a few days.'

Mr. Nyirishema stated that the discussions were positive and that the Ugandan Communications Commission was the first to suggest resolving the issue. He added that Rwanda reciprocated after seeking clarifications on why Kampala had blocked Rwandan sites.

When questioned about the reason behind the blockage, Mr. Nyirishema said that the Ugandan Communications Commission made it clear that they blocked sites which they considered hostile. He then told them that Rwanda would take the same action.

The agreement comes after Rwanda and Uganda leaders signed an agreement in Angola to end months of tensions which have gone on for over two years now.
