On August 22, 2019, a Kenyan man living in Texas, United States was sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting a mentally impaired woman.

Anthony Mamboleo Nyakeo, 53, was found guilty of raping a 74-year-old woman who suffered from dementia.

The victim died of Alzheimer’s disease months after the assaults at the age of 75.

According to the Tarrant County District Attorney’s office, Nyakeo worked as a nursing assistant at the Woodridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Grapevine, where the woman lived.

Prosecutors alleged that Nyakeo committed the act in January 2018, despite knowing that the woman could not consent to sex or resist his advances due to her mental condition.

Nyakeo denied the allegations, claiming that someone took his DNA from a used condom and planted it on the woman’s body.

However, DNA evidence recovered during a sexual assault exam tied Nyakeo to the assault, and he was convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of an elderly or disabled person.

His colleague testified against him, stating that she immediately suspected a sexual assault after seeing the condition the woman was in.

Nyakeo also faced allegations of sexually harassing his coworkers and attempting to leave Texas during the investigation.

His attorney had asked the jury for mercy in the form of probation, but the jury sided with the prosecution and sentenced Nyakeo to life in prison.
