As the Kenya Population and Housing Census kicked off on the night of Saturday, August 24, 2019, a video of a middle-aged man conducting his own census in the streets of Nairobi went viral.

The unidentified man, clad in a black buttoned coat and white khaki trousers, stationed himself at a matatu terminus and counted pedestrians and passengers, shouting 'I don't want anyone to distract me. Census has kicked off and please, allow to take head count.'

Interestingly, he seemed to be counting women only, sparking curiosity among onlookers.

Enumerators for the official census, which began at 6pm on August 24 and will end on August 31, will spend about 30 minutes in each house, wearing branded reflector jackets with official government signs.

Those not enumerated by August 31 are advised to report to the local administrative office.
