On Thursday morning, a 14-seater matatu rolled and landed in a ditch on the Bomet-Kisii highway in Kipsoen area, claiming five lives.

One passenger died instantly, while four others succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at Longisa County Referral Hospital.

Fourteen other passengers are undergoing treatment for their injuries sustained in the crash.

According to Bomet Sub-County Police Commander Musa Omari, the accident involved a Kisii-bound matatu belonging to Egesa Sacco.

Omari explained that the driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid hitting an oncoming car after overtaking another vehicle.

Members of the public and motorists rushed to the scene and pulled the victims out of the wreckage before taking them to hospital.

Two passengers in critical condition were later transferred to Tenwek Mission Hospital for further treatment.
