Kenya's teachers are facing a tough economic reality, with the cost of living having increased significantly since 2016. In response, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has submitted a proposal to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) seeking a salary increase.
Published on August 22, 2019, the proposal outlines a plan to increase the basic salary of teachers by between 30% and 70%, from the current minimum of Sh21,756 to Sh36,985 on the lower cadre.
According to the proposal, the increase is necessary to keep pace with the rising cost of living. The union also wants teachers who have stagnated in one position, particularly those in Job Group K and J, to be promoted.
However, the TSC has not commented on the issue of promotion, instead focusing on the proposal for a joint retreat between the commission and Kuppet to evaluate the progress and gaps in the implementation of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The union is also seeking to have the commission mandated by law to handle both the processing and payment of pension claims for Kuppet members.
