Kenya's teachers are facing a significant challenge in affording the current standard of living, with many calling for a salary increase from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

On August 22, 2019, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) submitted a proposal to the TSC outlining their demands for a pay rise.

The proposal, which was based on the significant difference in the cost of living from 2016 to date, aimed to increase the basic salary of teachers by 30% to 70%.

According to the proposal, teachers currently earning a basic pay of Ksh. 21,756 would see their salaries increase to Ksh. 36,985.

KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori stated that the union is ready to negotiate a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the TSC.

The union also requested that teachers in job groups K and J be promoted when vacancies arise, to encourage career progression.
