HMD Global, the company behind Nokia smartphones, has been busy upgrading its devices to the latest Android Pie operating system. However, the company is now shifting its focus to the next major update: Android 10.

According to an update roadmap shared by HMD Global's Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, on Twitter on August 22, 2019, the first Nokia smartphones to receive Android 10 will be doing so in the next quarter.

This is not surprising, given that the Nokia 8.1 has been part of the public beta testing programme run by Google since the third developer preview of Android 10 was released. The Nokia 8.1 will be joined by the flagship Nokia 9 PureView and the Nokia 7.1 in Q4 when Android 10 goes official.

Before the end of the year, the trio will be joined by last year's Android Pie pioneer Nokia 7 Plus, the Nokia 6.1 and Nokia 6.1 Plus. The rest of the Nokia smartphones released in 2018 and 2019 will be receiving their Android 10 upgrades in the first and second quarters of the new year.

As part of the Android One programme, these devices are guaranteed software upgrades. However, the first generation of Android-powered Nokia smartphones, released in 2017, has since run through its major upgrade support period. HMD Global has committed to continue providing crucial security updates for those devices through to Q4 2020.
