On August 22, 2019, suspended Governor of Kiambu Ferdinand Waititu made a public appearance for the first time since being suspended from office.
Waititu was seen alongside other leaders, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, during a memorial service for the late President Jomo Kenyatta at the Holy Family Basilica.
It was the first time Waititu had attended a public event since being accused of embezzling Ksh 588 million from the Kiambu County.
Waititu was suspended from office and barred from accessing the county's premises, but he was seen attending the memorial service alongside President Uhuru Kenyatta and other leaders, including Deputy President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the memorial service would be the last one held in honor of his father's death, which occurred in 1978.
"I have consulted with the family of Jomo Kenyatta and we have agreed that this will be the last memorial service for Mzee. I thank former President Moi for hosting this event for 21 years and former President Kibaki for hosting it for 10 years. Now, we will remember Mzee in our own way," President Kenyatta said.
