This archive report was first published on 22 August 2019.

On August 22, 2019, detectives led Tabitha Karanja and her husband Joseph, co-owners of Keroche Breweries, out of their Naivasha-based brewery after spending over 12 hours holed up inside.

They were taken away in separate Subaru vehicles that had been parked outside their premises since Wednesday night.

Tabitha Karanja appeared somber and avoided the gaze of the cameras, a stark contrast to her tough stance during a phone interview with Citizen TV's Jeff Koinange earlier that day.

During the interview, she had refused to hand herself over to the police, claiming she had not been officially informed of the arrest warrant.

She also accused the Kenya Revenue Authority and the Director of Public Prosecution of targeting her, insisting that her company had no tax arrears.

However, Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji had ordered the arrest and prosecution of the Karanjas over alleged evasion of taxes amounting to Ksh.14.4 billion.
