On August 22, 2019, Chief Justice David Maraga faced an angry crowd at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa, where he was attending the annual Judges' Colloquium.

The protestors, consisting of women and Boda Boda riders, stormed Maraga's meeting, claiming that corrupt judges are being protected and accused the Judiciary of frustrating the war on corruption and drug abuse.

They demanded that judges protecting drug cartels in Mombasa be fired, saying they were a party to killing their children in the coastal region.

Some protestors called for Maraga's resignation, stating that he had failed Kenyans.

Maraga was forced to leave the forum to address the demonstrating crowd, who had hooted outside the beach hotel.

Police later arrived at the scene and calmed the situation, allowing Maraga to address the crowd.

When asked by the protestors if he had a memorandum to address their issues, Maraga replied, 'Do you have any memorandum you have written? I cannot address your issues without a memorandum.'

He also acknowledged that there could be people in the Judiciary involved in corruption, saying, 'I can't deny that there could be people in the Judiciary who are involved in that. Just like the police who could be involved.'
