Manchester United's 2003 signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon marked the beginning of an illustrious career for the Portuguese star. However, what many may not know is that Ronaldo was initially set to join Arsenal before the deal fell through.
According to Ronaldo, he met with former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and was prepared to link up with the Frenchman's star-studded side. Wenger had identified something special in the teenage Ronaldo and had discussions with him about a potential deal.
However, a friendly clash between Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon saw things change instantly. Ronaldo's spectacular performance convinced Sir Alex Ferguson to plot a move for the promising winger, ultimately leading to his transfer to Old Trafford.
"I met with Arsene Wenger and was about to go to Arsenal. I talked to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter too but after the friendly against Manchester United, who were already interested," Ronaldo divulged to TVI.
"They became even more interested and they sped up negotiations and signed me," he added.
Ronaldo went on to drive Manchester United to three Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008, before sealing a then world-record move to Real Madrid and achieving legendary status.
