On the 41st memorial service of his father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, President Uhuru Kenyatta made a significant announcement on August 22, 2019.
Speaking at the Holy Family Basilica, where the President was joined by family members, including his brother Muhuho Kenyatta and Mama Ngina Kenyatta, Uhuru declared that the memorial celebrations would be the last public event held in honor of Mzee Kenyatta.
According to the President, the decision was made after consulting with the family members, and they had agreed that this would be the last celebration of Mzee in this manner.
” As president, I have consulted the family of the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, and after consulting them, we have agreed together that this is going to be the last celebration of Mzee in this manner,” Uhuru stated.
The memorial celebrations had been a tradition for the past 40 years, dating back to Mzee Kenyatta's death on August 22, 1978.
President Uhuru Kenyatta further stated that the celebrations would be carried out privately henceforth, thanking former Presidents Daniel Arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki for always honoring Kenyatta's memorial day.
During his speech, Uhuru urged all Kenyans to live at peace with their brothers and sisters.
