On August 22, 2019, Tabitha Karanja, the CEO of Keroche Breweries, was arrested in Naivasha, Kenya, following a directive from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Hajji to have her charged with tax evasion.
According to the DPP, the management of Keroche Breweries had been under investigation for allegedly failing to pay taxes on the company's sales between January 2015 and June 2019.
Tabitha Karanja and her husband, Joseph Karanja, were arrested and taken away in a vehicle that was parked outside their business premises in Naivasha.
The DPP alleged that the couple had evaded paying taxes amounting to approximately KSh 14.4 billion.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the allegations against Tabitha Karanja and her husband will be proven or denied.
