On August 22, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the end of a 41-year-old tradition that had been upheld by former Presidents Daniel Arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki.

The decision was made after consultations with the larger Kenyatta family, according to the President.

August 22 had been observed as the day Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta died, a tradition that dated back to 1978.
