August 22, 2019 - The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has named Mercy Wanjau as acting Director General, following the expiry of Francis Wangusi's term.

CAK Board Chairman Ngene Gituku announced the appointment, expressing confidence in Wanjau's ability to coordinate the duties of the Director General's office in the interim.

"Ms. Mercy Wanjau is a commercial lawyer, regulatory and governance expert with over 15 years of experience in the sector," Gituku said.

Wanjau holds a Bachelor of Law degree and a Master's degree in Corporate law and taxation.

Gituku emphasized the Board's commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and delivering on its vision of a digitally transformed nation.

"I wish to congratulate Ms. Mercy Wanjau on this appointment and call on the industry and other stakeholders to support her in consolidating and sustaining the gains realized in the sector," he said.

Wanjau brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as a director of legal affairs at CAK and as a consultant with KPMG South Africa and Price Waterhouse Coopers Kenya.

She also served on an international secondment at the UN-International Telecommunications Union.

Gituku praised Wangusi for his contributions to deepening digital financial inclusion and promoting innovation in various sectors of the economy.

"There is no doubt Wangusi has made a mark in the sector and will remain an important footnote in the history of the ICT industry for a long time," Gituku said.

Wangusi's replacement comes despite a court case filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya, which sought to stop his exit, arguing that CAK does not have a properly constituted board to name a new director general.
