The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has announced plans to include travellers on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the upcoming census exercise.

According to the census plans, roadblocks will be erected on the highway from August 24 to 25, resulting in huge traffic snarl-ups as officials enumerate travellers and drivers.

Speaking during a press conference, Makueni County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed explained that roadblocks will be placed at Salama, Emali, and Mtito-Andei towns to capture the details of truck drivers and other travellers.

Enumerators will stop every vehicle along the highway, with police officers accompanying them in areas prone to human-wildlife conflict, such as Kiboko, Mikululo, Kalembe Raha, Kiu, Kaunguni, and Muuni in Makindu sub-county.

Additionally, areas of concern include Kikunduku, Nthongoni, Kathekani, parts of Masongaleni in Kibwezi sub-county, and borders of Tsavo East and Chyullu National Parks.

As part of the census process, bar owners have been directed to close their businesses by 6pm, as reiterated by Interior CS Fred Matinag'i.

The Makueni County team has 2,986 enumerators, 496 content supervisors, and 54 technical officers to conduct the census.
