Published on August 22, 2019, many of us reflect on our teenage years and wonder what we could have done differently. While we can't turn back the clock, we can educate our teens and pre-teens on crucial life skills that aren't taught in schools.

Here are six essential life skills every parent should instill in their teenagers:

1. Money Matters

Teaching your teen how to manage finances is vital, even if they may not fully understand the importance of it at their age. One way to educate them is by involving them in household budgeting tasks, allowing them to learn good spending habits.

2. Personal Hygiene

Proper hygiene practices are best taught by guardians and parents, especially during puberty. Reach out to your teen and teach them good hygiene and grooming skills, including how to clean up during their period and shave facial hair.

3. Sex Education

It's essential to educate your teenagers about safe sex, healthy relationships, and how to differentiate between the two. Be open with your teens, and provide them with the opportunity to be open with you.

4. Online Etiquette

With the rise of technology and online platforms, it's crucial to teach your children online etiquette, including how to respect others in real life and online. This will help protect them from cyberbullying and online trolls.

5. Good Communication Skills

Teach your teenagers how to communicate and express themselves effectively. Make them feel comfortable enough to express their emotions, which can be challenging during the teenage years.

6. Basic First Aid Skills

Ensure your teens are aware of emergency service lines and other important contact information, such as your family doctor. Train them on how to use basic equipment, like small household fire extinguishers, in case of emergencies.
