On August 21, 2019, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) revealed that the construction of Nairobi's longest flyover would cost taxpayers Sh10 billion.

The project, which will be financed by the Japanese government through a loan, involves the construction of a 700-metre bridge over the Nairobi Railway Station between the Industrial Area and the city centre.

According to Kura's acting director in charge of planning and urban roads development, Daniel Muchiri, the winner of the contract will have two years to complete the project.

Mr. Muchiri stated that the contractor responsible for the bridge's construction will also be responsible for building a new market where Wakulima traders will be relocated.

Kenya and the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) intend to construct a viaduct over the railway yard, with a study in 2016 establishing that a section of the flyover would be built on land currently occupied by Wakulima Market.
