KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has maintained his position as the union's leader, despite a seven-day ultimatum from the national executive council to vacate office.

On Tuesday, the council held a crisis meeting, questioning Sossion's suitability to continue leading the teachers' union. The meeting was disrupted by rowdy youth, who were later scuttled by police.

The Teachers Service Commission had issued a notice to remove Sossion from the teachers register, citing his breach of the TSC Act. According to the commission, Sossion had caused paralysis of the competency-based curriculum training in 11 counties in April this year.

The commission also stated that Sossion had failed to act with impartiality and loyalty, as he had accepted nomination by the Orange Democratic Party as a Member of Parliament in 2017. This, the commission argued, contravened various regulations of the TSC code of conduct and ethics for teachers.

As per the constitution, if Sossion has been struck off the register of teachers, he has no choice but to step down.

“Persons eligible for membership of the union shall be only those who are or have been regularly and normally engaged as a teacher,” reads the constitution.

It adds that one shall cease to be a member of the union if he/she has been dismissed and his/her certificate, licence or authority to teach has been cancelled by TSC.
