Kenya is gearing up for its population census, and the government has taken measures to ensure that everyone is counted. As part of these efforts, the Mombasa-Nairobi highway will be closed on the night of the census, with roadblocks set up at Mtito Andei, Emali, and Salama townships.
According to Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim, motorists and travelers will be flagged down at these roadblocks to ensure that they have participated in the census. Those who have not will be required to fill out the necessary forms before being allowed to continue their journey.
Mr. Maalim made this announcement at a press conference in Wote Town, where he addressed the county's preparations for the census. The county administrator and Governor Kivutha Kibwana have also directed that all bars and premises licensed to sell alcoholic beverages remain closed for 24 hours starting from 6pm on August 24 to ensure maximum participation in the census.
Bar owners who defy this directive risk having their licenses revoked, the governor warned in a statement.
