Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta is on the cusp of a loan move to AS Roma, marking the end of his tumultuous spell at Stamford Bridge.

Published on August 21, 2019, the Italian's difficult stint at the club began in 2017 when he joined from Torino.

Despite the arrival of new manager Frank Lampard, Zappacosta has struggled to secure a starting place, with former manager Maurizio Sarri and current manager Lampard preferring Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back.

With the availability of Azpilicueta and promising youngster Reece James in the squad, it was evident that Zappacosta would face an uphill battle to break into Lampard's starting lineup.

However, Roma now appear to have offered the former Torino defender an escape route, with the hope of rediscovering his form.

He will be Paulo Fonseca's fifth summer signing at Roma, having already landed the services of Amadou Diawara, Pau Lopez, Mert Celtin, and Leonardo Spinazzola.

He will be hoping to make the squad that will battle Genoa on Sunday, August 25, in Roma's Serie A opener.
