On August 21, 2019, Deputy President William Ruto announced his decision to field a candidate in the Kibra parliamentary by-election.

According to Kipchumba Murkomen, the decision was made after wide consultations with the party leadership.

"After wide consultations, the Deputy President will be fielding a candidate for the forthcoming parliamentary by-elections in Kibra constituency. This is in the spirit of furthering the legacy that Ken Okoth has left behind," Murkomen said in a statement.
