On August 20, 2019, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officials in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu, over remarks the police deemed inflammatory.

Cherargei, a staunch supporter of Deputy President William Ruto, was summoned after a video showed him warning Dr Ruto's critics of unspecified action.

He was driven to the Eldoret West divisional DCI office to record a statement and was later taken to Kisumu under tight security.

At Kisumu Central Police Station, Cherargei was interrogated and released on a personal free bond, with instructions to present himself at the DCI offices in Nandi the next day.

Cherargei claimed that his statement meant they would meet the people criticising Ruto at the ballot in 2022, and denied any wrongdoing.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, who joined him at the police station, criticised the officers over what he termed as 'selective investigations.'
