Published on August 20, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated a new team to run the National Land Commission (NLC) for the next six years, a move that comes with significant challenges.

The new team, led by lawyer Gershom Otachi, will have to restore the NLC's image, which has been marred by corruption allegations and a troubled tenure under former chairman Prof Muhammad Swazuri.

The commission was established to clean up and streamline the management of national land and resolve historical injustices, but it has been embroiled in a turf war with the Lands ministry and faced criticism for its handling of key issues.

With the new team's approval by Parliament, Kenyans will be expecting better stewardship and delivery on the NLC's crucial mandate.
