Published on August 20, 2019, the Punguza Mizigo Initiative has ignited a fierce debate in Kenya's political landscape. The proposal, which aims to reduce the burden on citizens, has both supporters and detractors.

Establishment politicians have dismissed the initiative outright, viewing it as a threat to their power and influence. However, others see it as an opportunity to create a new centre of power and bring about much-needed change in the country's politics.

One of the key proposals in the initiative is to increase the revenue disbursed to counties to 35 per cent of the audited national revenues, up from the current minimum of 15 per cent. This has been met with excitement from Members of County Assemblies, who see it as a chance to deliver more resources to the grassroots.

However, critics argue that the proposal lacks a clear plan on how to raise the necessary funds. Others have raised concerns about the far-reaching implications of some of the proposals, including the change in the presidential term limit from 10 years divided into two sessions to one term of seven years.

While the initiative has its merits, it is essential to critically examine the proposals and assess their viability. The debate on the Punguza Mizigo Initiative should be guided by reasoned thinking and informed decision-making, rather than emotional reactions.
