Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's government was on the brink of collapse after a Senate debate sparked by far-right leader Matteo Salvini.
On August 20, 2019, Conte announced that he would tender his resignation at the end of the Senate debate, citing the end of his government experience.
"I'm ending this government experience here...I will go to the president of the republic (Sergio Mattarella) to inform him of my resignation", Conte said after the debate.
