On July 20, 2019, the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) issued a prohibition notice to Acacia Mining, halting gold processing at its North Mara mine in Tanzania due to environmental concerns.

The notice was issued after the mine failed to contain and prevent seepage from its tailings storage facility, prompting the NEMC to demand that the mine cease operations until it could ensure that the seepage was contained.

Despite receiving export permits from the Tanzania Mining Commission and the Ministry of Minerals, Acacia Mining was forced to halt gold processing at the mine, citing the NEMC prohibition notice.

However, raw mining at the North Mara Gold Mine remains unaffected, with mined ore being stockpiled.

Acacia Mining has also resumed the export of gold from North Mara, with the company stating that it will be able to meet its financial obligations for an extended period of time.

Notably, the North Mara mine saw a significant increase in gold production during the first quarter, with April gold production rising to 33,941 ounces, 54% above the monthly average production.
