Joash Onyango Named 2019 SJAK Player of the Year ¶
Joash Onyango, a 26-year-old defender for Gor Mahia, has been awarded the 2019 SJAK Player of the Year title. He received this honor after contributing significantly to K'Ogalo's 18th KPL title win in the 2018 season.
Onyango's impressive performance in the domestic league earned him a spot in the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, where he suffered a serious injury before the tournament.
As part of the SJAK awards, Onyango was awarded KSh 1.25 million and an LG 55-inch smart television, accompanied by a massive trophy. He faced stiff competition from his former teammate Francis Kahata and Golden boot winner Enosh Ochieng, who earned awards in other categories.
Onyango's nickname 'Old man Joash' gained popularity after he dyed his beard white before the AFCON, a look he later got rid of.
Other notable winners of the SJAK awards include Faruk Shikalo, who earned the Golden Glove award after 13 clean sheets, and ex-Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay, who was named Coach of the Year.
David Majak of Tusker FC received the New Young Player award for his excellent performance in the 2018 season.
