Nyeri Dowry Ceremony Turns Tragic ¶
On Thursday, August 15, a family gathered in Rodoma village, Nyeri county, for a dowry payment ceremony that was supposed to be a joyous moment. However, the event turned into a funeral after people consumed food suspected to have been poisoned.
At least four people, including the mother of the groom and two in-laws, died of suspected food poisoning. Several others were hospitalized after complaining of stomach problems and diarrhea.
The cooks who prepared the food were reportedly hired from Gikomba in Nairobi. Kieni West assistant county commissioner Samuel Kariuki confirmed the tragic incident, stating that the dowry payment ceremony took place on Thursday, August 15, in Rodoma village.
According to Kariuki and other sources, the killer meal was cooked by chefs from Nairobi's Gikomba, hired by the groom. Some of the guests were rushed to Kariminu dispensary for urgent medical attention.
